NERC Commences Public Inquiry On Electricity Metering
A 13-man committee conducting a public inquiry into the electricity metering issues yesterday commenced sitting in Lagos and assured the public that nobody would be intimidated in carrying out the assignment.
Mr Bamidele Aturu, the Chairman, Panel of Inquiry on Metering in Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), gave the assurance in his remarks at the committee’s inaugural sitting.
Our correspondent reports that the committee was inaugurated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Dec. 21 to conduct an inquiry into metering and related issues.
He said, “Our task is to assist the regulator in its task of providing an efficient and fair template to ensure that consumers are equitably billed by having a sound metering system.
“This is not a judicial commission of enquiry or a public trial of any person or organisation. We are basically a fact-finding committee. We intend to stick to that mandate.
“Nobody will be witch-hunted by this committee. The key benefit of this exercise is to strengthen the regulatory process in the electricity sector.
“We promise to be thorough and fair in our recommendations no matter whose interest” is at stake.
Aturu said that the committee had decided to conduct the public hearing in all the six geo-political zones to afford consumers and other stakeholders in the electricity sector the opportunity to state their positions.
He said that this would create the enabling environment for both the authority and electricity consumers to address the lingering problems associated with the metering and electricity consumption.
NERC chairman Dr Sam Amadi said that the committee was saddled with the responsibility to conduct a public inquiry on the way forward to address the issues of metering.
He said, “It is of serious concern to us that there is a growing consumer resentment occasioned by complaints about metering, billing and customer care.
“These complaints worryingly point to the fact that changes need to happen and happen fast too.
“The commission’s evolving data gathering process is aimed at conducting a diagnosis of the state of the complex and perennial metering problem in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.”
