NCSU Lauds Civil Service Commission’s Strides
The Rivers State Civil Service Commission (CSC), has been commended for its drive to return the service to its pride of place.
Comrade Opuoyibo Lilly-West, State Chairman of Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) who made the commendation in a chat with newsmen in his office, described the state Chairman of the commission, Sir Ngo Martyns-Yellowe as a man in a hurry to inject the desired dynamism and justice into the civil service.
Comrade Lilly-West lauded Governor Amaechi for recognising Martyns-Yellowe’s commitment and dedication to duty and eagerness to reposition the civil service as worthwhile and enjoined him to remain focused.
He said the commendation was justified going by his positive attitude towards work which he has demonstrated by his tour of ministries to interface with the workers on their prospects and challenges.
The union chairman observed that the tour of ministries was unique and innovative, saying , it showed the commission chairman’s willingness to add value to the civil service by providing the desired direction.
“I want to tell you that the chairman of the State Civil Service Commission is doing well and we want to appreciate him and also want to say that this is the kind of person we would want to work with in the system. As we speak, he is going round the ministries to know what their problems are and take them to government for consideration and this is a good move for the civil service,” he noted.
Comrade Lilly-West expressed gratitude to the State Government for its support to the commission by giving a facelift to the office complex which he noted had remained in a sorry state over the years.
The union leader therefore appealed to civil servants to give their co-operation to the leadership of the commission to enable it work in their best interest.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
