PH Residents Hail Drainage Clean-up Exercise
Residents of Port Harcourt City Council have welcome the emptying of rubbish indiscreminately dumped into drainage channels in their area.
A resident of Moore House Street, Mr. Boma Biokpo who spoke toThe Tide said the clearing of the rubbish from drainage will mininise the level of flood experience during rainstorm.
He thanked the relevant authority for embarking on the clearing of the drainage now that the rainy season is around the corner.
He reason that the covering of constructed dramage in the area in future would further assist to discourage dumping of refuse by residents in the area.
At Oil of Joy, a resident Madam, Helen Amasoperi, also welcomed the idea, when according to her, men and women working for a company were seen clearing refuse indiscriminately dumped into gutters in their presidential area.
However, she called on the contracting firm to act fast by conveying the black nylon bags containing the rubbish from the drainage channels before the next rainfall.
Amasoperi observed that some of the black nylon bags containing the rubbish dumped by the roadside on Harold Wilson Drive are left uncleared; a development she suggested could cause further environmental disaster.
At Rumukurushi Street, a resident Mr. Danuete Koko expressed satisfaction with the clearing of the drainage in the area.
He commended the state government for checking impending flood disaster at the old Port Harcourt Township.
When contact, the Press Secretary to the state Environmental Sanitation Authority, Mr. Olalekan Ige, said the authority took assertive approach in tackling the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into available drainage. Hence the authority assigned some contractors; as part of the neighbourhood sanitation exercise to clear drainage to check impending flood.
