Desert Encroachment: Kebbi Earmarks N1.9m For Awareness Campaign
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ishaku Daud says, the Kebbi Government has earmarked N1.9 million for enlightenment on desert encroachment.
Daud told our correspondent in Birnin Kebbi on Saturday that the environment and agriculture ministries would jointly ensure proper management of nurseries and tree seedlings for effective fight against desert encroachment.
He also said that both ministries would ensure proper utilisation of the 200 persons recruited under the afforestation programme to forestall tree felling and environmental degradation.
The commissioner said that people would be encouraged to form afforestation clubs and associations and that such clubs and associations would be supported with seedlings and inputs.
He said that 25,000 seedlings would be provided to 210 rural dwellers to encourage the establishment of orchards, adding that 10 people from each local government area would benefit from the programme.
