Farmers Demand Micro-Finance Banks
In order to make life more meaningful to the rural farmer in the country, the Federal government has been called upon to establish micro-finance banks in all the local government headquarters of the country in order to take care of the financial needs of the peasant farmers across the country.
The Paramount ruler of Emoh Community in the Abua/Odual local government area of Rivers State, Chief Thankyou Ignenewari who made the appeal in a chat with our special correspondent in his palace said that the Federal government should laise with the central bank of Nigeria CBN for the setting up of the finance Institutions.
He said the call became necessary considering the present administration’s transformation agenda as regards agriculture as a component of the Millinum Development Goal process.
He further called on the Federal and States Ministry of agriculture to without delay work out modalities for the posting of agriculture extension officers to all the local government headquarters of the country for feasibility studies on the setting up of the micro-finance banks.
He decried the situation were most local government headquarters in Rivers State have no banks and called on the appropriate financial institutions to reverse the trend.
The royal father described as unacceptable a situation were two banks alone serve the whole of the Orashi region, adding that “how can First Bank and Ecobank in Ahoada serve, Abua/Odual, Ahoada East, Ahoada West and beyond”.
