Sanitation Authority Wages War On Illegal Structures
Business activities almost came to a standstill as officials from the Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority embarked on the demolition of illegal structures in Port Harcourt and environs.
An eye witness told The Tide that as early as 7am on Friday, 27 January, 2012 bulldozers from the saitation Authority swung into action at the Rumola Junction and levelled many illegal structures.
A lady taxi driver, who simply gave her name as ‘Baby Sure’ praised the action of the State Environmental Authority for waging war on illegal structures, noting that at least, the traffic snarl is over.
She called on the sanitation authority to visit other business centres to pull down identified illegal structures to give the city a face lift.
Reacting to the demolition, a trader Hyiencienth Nwakwo explained that the notice given to some of the traders was short.
He claimed that the identified business area was allocated to them by some officials in the sanitation authority.
Speaking to newsmen shortly after the demolition of illegal structures in a number of the business areas, at Ogbunabali Garison junction, and Rumuola, the chairman of the State Sanitation Authority, Hon Isobo Jack, said the exercise would continue.
He explained that the demolition exercise is part of the urban renewal policy of the present administration.
According to RSESA, the exercise would clear the drainages for easy flow of water during rainy season.
Jack further explained that the demolition of identified illegal structures, would promote effective town planning.
According to him, many of the traders caught would be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others, who may take delight in violating the law.
However, he declined to mention how many traders so far prosecuted for violation of the state urban renewal law.
It would be recalled that the State Environmental Sanitation Authority had earlier through various enlightenment programmes and government announcement warned the traders of demolition exercise scheduled to begin in the state early last week.
