FG Unveils LPG Penetration, Cylinder Distribution In Bayelsa … As Diri Praises Tinubu On Initiative
The Federal Government has flaged-off a programme tagged, “Decade of Gas: National Grassroots LPG Penetration and cylinder distribution” in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
In his address, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Dr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, described the event as a historic milestone, noting that Bayelsa became the first state to host the state-level LPG cylinder distribution programme due to its strategic importance to the Nigeria hydrocarbon industry.
He said the programme was designed to make clean cooking energy more accessible to households, reduce dependence on firewood and charcoal, improve public health, protect the environment and stimulate economic opportunities along the LPG value chain.
The Minister stated that the initiative is in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Bola Tinubu’s administration, while also assuring beneficiaries that refill centres would be established closer to communities to make access to LPG more convenient.
Ekpo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that gas prices remain affordable for ordinary Nigerians.
The Tide gathered that the programme is expected to cover about 2,700 beneficiaries in the state.
“The State-level LPG cylinder distribution programme is designed to make clean cooking energy more accessible to households, reduce dependence on firewood and charcoal, improve public health, protect the environment and stimulate economic opportunities along the LPG value chain.
“We want to assure beneficiaries that refill centres would be established closer to communities to make access to LPG more convenient, while reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring that gas prices remain affordable for ordinary Nigerians”, he said.
In his address, the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, commended President Tinubu for the Federal Government’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Penetration Initiative, describing it as a bold step towards improving the welfare of Nigerians.
The Governor also noted that the scheme, which targets the distribution of compressed cylinders gas to vulnerable Nigerians that have long relied on firewood for cooking, would reduce wood logging, deforestation and the attendant environmental impact.
Diri said the programme marked a significant shift in the Federal Government’s approach to ensuring that communities that produce the nation’s oil and gas resources also enjoy the benefits of cleaner and safer energy.
He stated that for decades, communities in the Niger Delta suffered environmental degradation, poverty and neglect despite contributing immensely to the nation’s economy, while further stressing that the LPG initiative signals the beginning of a positive change.
“I want to thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas), development partners and sponsors for bringing the programme to Bayelsa State.
“This initiative aligns with our administration’s resolve to improving the quality of life of our citizens. I therefore urge residents to embrace clean cooking energy and discard the misconception that food prepared with firewood was superior”, he said.
He applauded the Federal Government’s decision to provide beneficiaries six free cylinder refills, while also appealing for a review of the implementation framework to allow for a longer transition period before states assume the responsibility.
The State Chief Executive reaffirmed the state government’s readiness to partner the Federal Government in expanding access to clean energy and improving the welfare of citizens.
“About 60 per cent of the gas to the NLNGC is derived from Bayelsa State. But guess what? No tax is paid to the government of Bayelsa. All the taxes are paid to other state governments. What is the benefit of the people from where this gas is collected?
“Bayelsa State had been shortchanged for decades and that is largely responsible for the state’s low internally generated revenue base.
“The people of the Niger Delta suffer lots of health hazards coupled with the environmental degradation caused by decades of oil exploration and gas flaring. And so this situation prompted my predecessor, Senator Seriake Dickson, to establish the Bayelsa State Oil and Environment Commission (BSOEC) to look into the effects of oil spills and gas flares by oil companies operating in the region”, the Governor added.
Earlier in his address, the Coordinating Director of the “Decade of Gas Initiative”, Mr. Ed Ubong, stated that the Federal Government aims to transition five million Nigerian households to LPG for cooking by 2030 under the programme.
Ubong said the initiative targets one million households annually and described Bayelsa as the ideal starting point for the programme as hosts to one of Africa’s largest gas processing facilities and holding a significant place in Nigeria’s oil and gas history.

NDDC Backs Federal Drive To Cut Maternal, Newborn Deaths … Trains Traditional Birth Attendants
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has stated its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), with a renewed push to tackle the persistently high rate of preventable maternal and newborn deaths across the Niger Delta.
The Commission made the pledge during workshops for traditional birth attendants held in Delta and Bayelsa states, where it stressed the need for stronger collaboration between traditional birth attendants and the orthodox healthcare system to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Speaking at the training, the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, urged women to embrace modern medical care while leveraging the trusted role of traditional birth attendants in their communities.
Represented by the Principal Manager, Education, Health and Social Services (EHSS), Mrs. Dare-Oloko Kuami, Ogbuku described maternal and child mortality as an alarming public health challenge that requires urgent and collective action.
“The rate of death among women and children is alarming and must be eradicated. This training is designed to enlighten our women and should not be taken for granted”, he said.
According to him, the workshop was organised to strengthen the knowledge and capacity of traditional birth attendants in providing safe maternal and newborn care, identifying pregnancy-related complications early, and referring high-risk cases promptly to hospitals and health centres.
Also speaking, the Director of Education, Health and Social Services, Dr. Patience Ezugu, called on women to take issues relating to childbirth seriously, stressing that improved knowledge and adherence to safe delivery practices would help save lives.
Represented by the Principal Manager, EHSS, Dr. Otokolo Fidelis, Ezugu disclosed that more than 300 women from Delta and Bayelsa states participated in the training and were provided with medical equipment and cash support to enhance their services.
One of the resource persons, Mrs. Gift Akitiri, underscored the vital role traditional birth attendants continue to play in many rural communities, noting that regular capacity building would improve the quality of maternal healthcare delivery.
“Traditional birth attendants are trusted members of many communities. By equipping them with updated knowledge, we are helping to ensure that mothers and newborns receive timely and appropriate care, thereby improving health outcomes”, she said.
A participant, Mrs. Franscica Odiakosa, commended the NDDC for organising the workshop, describing it as timely and impactful.
“I have gained valuable knowledge that will improve the quality of healthcare I provide in my community. I have also learnt the importance of referring expectant mothers to health centres and hospitals whenever a case is beyond my capacity”, she said, while urging the Commission to sustain the initiative.
