FG Releases N7bn Pension Arrears For Ex-Servicemen
The Federal Government, has released the sum of N7 billion for the payment of pension arrears of ex-servicemen.
The Minister of Defence, Dr Bello Haliru, told newsmen in Abuja at the Armed Forces Remembrance Day ceremony that the legionnaires would receive their pensions without delay.
“Only two days ago I launched the conversion of the military pension back to its former position and the sum of N7 billion was released by government for all those with arrears to be paid.
“So, very soon all pensioners will receive their pay and henceforth they will continue to be paid as due.
“They have been put back on the Military Pension Scheme now; we have removed them from the National Pension Scheme because we want to make sure their payment is as due,” he said.
Also speaking, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, said the police would continue to work with the military and other security agencies to ensure peace and tranquility in the country.
On the ceremony, Ringim said that it was to honour the country’s fallen heroes and inspire serving security personnel.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, retired Col. Michah Gaya, described the event as a “tiny proportion’’ of what was supposed to be done for the families of the deceased officers.
Gaya expressed dismay that many widows of officers, who lost their lives during the country’s civil war had yet to receive any form of financial assistance from government and called for support to them.
