Ensg, Nurtw Agree 30% Increase In Fares
The Enugu State Government and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) have agreed to peg increases in inter-state transport fares at 30 per cent to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.
Speaking after a closed-door stakeholders’ meeting with the Department of Petroleum Resource (DPR) and the Association of Mass Transit Owners, the state’s Commissioner for Transport, Pastor Dan Anike, said the measure would take effect from Jan.16.
Anike explained that the aim of the meeting was also to ensure adherence to the pump price of fuel in the state by marketers, adding that it would enable the citizens go about their businesses without much difficulties.
He said the state government had planned to meet with the Independent Petroleum Marketers to ensure availability of products in the state.
“The Association of Mass Transit Owners, after a closed door meeting, have also agreed that increment in the inter-city transport fares from next week will no longer be more than 30 per cent so that our brothers and sisters who have come home will have the opportunity of going back to their place of domicile.
“We are happy for this cooperation they have given to us.’’
The state’s Commissioner for Human Development and Poverty Reduction, Mr Godwin Ogenyi, said the pegging of transport fares would help reduce the sufferings of the people and enhance their livelihood.
Ogenyi said they had concluded with the intra-city transport operators to reduce the fare by N20.
“We have agreed with the local transport operators plying places like Obiagu and Abakpa to Old Park to bring down their fares to N50 per drop from the current N70.’’
The Operations Controller of the DPR, Mr Innocent Akpamgbo, pledged its commitment to regulate and enforce the price of fuel to ensure that consumers were not short-changed.
“We are to enforce, we will go to stations to make sure they do not sell above the pegged pump price.’’
The Assistant Secretary of the NURTW, Mr Godswill Okonkwo, said the meeting was a welcome development.
He said the union would take adequate measures to communicate the agreement to its members.
“We in the transport sector have agreed to at least address the hike in transport fare. Addressing it means coming down to review it on the downward because we actually appreciate the fact that our people are suffering.’’
The Chief Executive Officer of Peace Mass Transit, Mr Samuel Onyishi, commended the state government for organising the meeting.
He appealed to his colleagues in the transport sector to reduce transportation fares in the interest of the public.
The newsmen reports that all the stakeholders in the transport sector in the state were represented at the meeting.

NCDMB Partner Dafinone For Youths Technical Skills Training
Reports say that the training is designed to equip youths with practical technical skills for employment in the oil and gas and construction sectors, with emphasis on employability, safety, competence and self reliance.
In attendance at the flag-off ceremony this week, at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Hall, Effurun, were stakeholders, dignitaries, and political representatives, among others.
Dafinone, represented by his Chief of Staff, Adelabu Bodjor, said the initiative reflects a deliberate political investment in human capital development across Delta Central.
He explained that the training focuses on rigging and scaffolding, noting that “both are essential technical competencies required in industrial operations, construction projects, and oil and gas installations”.
Bodjor added, “The programme is intended to reduce dependency among youths by providing job-ready skills capable of supporting long-term economic opportunities and self-sufficiency. The initiative aligns with Senator Dafinone’s broader development agenda, which prioritises practical skill acquisition as a pathway to sustainable empowerment.”
Also addressing the participants, the NCDMB, Felix Omatsola Ogbe, represented by Mr. Teddy Bai, commended Dafinone for sponsoring the programme, describing it as “a timely response to critical manpower gaps in the industry”.
Bai explained that rigging and scaffolding remain safety-sensitive skills required across fabrication yards, offshore platforms, and construction sites, stressing that the programme bridges the gap between certification and practical competence.
He also charged the training consultant, OROH Contractors Limited, to maintain strict standards of professionalism, safety, and discipline, while urging participants to remain committed, focused, and disciplined throughout the exercise.
The Senate Liaison Officer for Sapele Local Government Area, Chief Patrick Akamuvba, , described the programme as a major step in strengthening human capital development in Delta Central.
Akamuvba said scaffolding and rigging skills are in high demand across residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects, noting that the training offers real employment opportunities for beneficiaries
He urged participants to prioritise knowledge and certification over short-term material expectations, stressing that discipline and seriousness would determine their long-term success.
He also cautioned youths against social vices and distractions, advising them to remain focused to maximise the opportunities provided by the programme.
