Subsidy: Rivers Commuters Lament Fare Hike
Transport fares have been increased in parts of the country following the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.
Our correspondent reports that most filling stations witnessed long queues, as they sell the product to motorists between N150 and N200 per litre.
The Tide investigation revealed that there were long queues in filling stations that sold the product at N150, while those that sold at N200 per litre recorded low patronage.
Consequently, the situation had led to increase in transportation fares in the state, and made some travellers to be stranded.
A journey from Abakaliki to Enugu, which cost N300, now costs N1,000, while Abakaliki to Afikpo, which was formerly N250, now costs N900.
In Makurdi, motorists said that the removal of the subsidy would slow the tempo of economic activities in the country.
A check in Makurdi showed that different marketers sold petrol at different prices.
Some independent marketers sold a litre of petrol at N170, while major marketers, especially the NNPC mega stations, sold at the rate of N150 per litre.
Mr Michael Aondona, a commercial driver, appealed to the government to listen to the voices of the ordinary people and revert to the old pump price to cushion their hardship.
He said that motorists had hiked their fares, adding that they now charge N500 from Makurdi to Gboko as against N350, while Makurdi to Otukpo that was N500, now costs N700.
Mr Moses Kwaghngu, a staff of the Benue Links Transport Corporation, told newsmen that the company had also effected new transport fares on its routes in line with the new petrol pump price.
