Rep Advises Agencies On Funds Generation
Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Environment, Rep. Uche Ekwunife, has urged agencies of the Ministry of Environment to improve on their revenue generating capacities to avoid being merged.
Ekwunife gave the charge when she led members of the committee on a familiarisation visit to the Minister of Environment, Mrs Hadiza Mailafia in Abuja.
She reminded the agencies of the government’s plan to merge agencies that performed similar functions as well as those not generating funds.
She said the National Environmental Standard and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) had potential to generate funds and urged the managements to exploit available opportunities.
Ekwunife said the assembly would work with the ministry to boost its efforts in generating funds to supplement its budgetary allocation and tackle environmental problems.
She described the environment as a key sector in the transformation agenda of the present administration and called on the ministry to intensify efforts toward achieving “healthier and environmental sustainability”.
The chairman also urged the ministry to create adequate public awareness on refuse disposal, reduction in pollution and environmental regulations to ensure compliance to environmental laws.
“Time has come for us to do something urgent to address environmental issues across the country in order to have a better and healthier environment,’’ she said.
Earlier, Mailafia said the country was blessed with lots of untapped natural resources with potential to enhance national development.
She said Nigeria faced various environmental challenges, including drought and desertification in the north, gully erosion in the southeast, oil spillage and gas flaring in the south-south and flooding in the south-west .
The minister said the ministry was making efforts to combat illegal mining and other environmental degrading activities.
