Youths Charge FG On Oil Exploration Resumption In Ogoniland
The National Youth Council of the Ogoni People (NYCOP), the apex youth body in Ogoni, has called on the Federal Government to initiate the process for the utilization of the oil wealth in the area to boost its economy, that of Rivers State, and the country at large.
President of NYCOP, Theophilus Mbagha, who made the call at a youth event hosted by the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) at its headquarters in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, Rivers State, said there is already a developmental blueprint in place to guide the oil and its uses.
He urged the Federal Government to work to take measures to develop Ogoniland, in order not to prevent a situation where oil is drilled without the people benefiting from the wealth of their land.
Mbagha noted that the youths of Ogoni fully back MOSOP’s development blueprint through its Ogoni Development Authority (ODA), adding that the idea, if fully executed, would speed up development in Ogoniland.
He said: “The idea of ODA is not strange to NYCOP, it is hoped and believed to be a pathway to solving the long lasting issue rocking not only the Ogoni people, but the national economy.
“If the Federal Government wants to be objective in their approach to the Ogoni case, they should endorse the ODA. I can boldly state unequivocally that it should be time to resume oil exploration.
“We at NYCOP are watching events as they unfold. Any plan of oil exploration return in Ogoniland must be properly negotiated and the ODA is our benchmark. Nothing more, nothing less”.
Also speaking, the MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke, called on Ogoni youths to reject their present conditions of living where graduates cannot find jobs and Ogoni youths are becoming less competitive.
He said Ogonis have opposed the Federal Government for long, noting that the time has come for work to commence in Ogoniland and for the youths and Ogoni generally to benefit from the wealth of their land.
“We need to understand, young people, that we cannot continue to have an Ogoni where you go to school and wake up in morning and cannot find one company where you can seek a job.
“I am here to tell you today that what we have been pursuing is to address underdevelopment. We must reject the exploitation of the past so we can address underdevelopment.
“The only way out is that the resources of Ogoni must be committed to Ogoni development. That is where the future lies”, Nsuke told the Ogoni youths.
He continued that, “Anybody who tells you that the Ogoni struggle was all about resisting and fighting the government misses it. Our future as Nigerians depend on the decisions the government make and so we need to dialogue with the system”.

UNIPORT Moves To Tackle Insecurity … Inducts Security Experts
The University of Port Harcourt, has taken a significant step towards addressing the issue of insecurity in Nigeria by producing security experts through its Institute of Niger Delta Studies (INDS), with the institute inducting its first graduating students into the Nigerian Institute For Industrial Security (NIIS), with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General E E Emekah, delivering a quality lecture on the topic, “Promoting Blue Economy In The Niger Delta: The Place Of Security”.
In his lecture, Major General Emekah emphasised the importance of security in promoting the blue economy in the Niger Delta region.
He noted that the activities of the Joint Tasks Force (JTF) are geared towards maintaining peace on Nigerian waterways and promoting productivity, and also stressed the need for a non-kinetic approach to security operations, winning the hearts and minds of the communities, and collaborating with security personnel to fight insecurity.
The GOC charged the inductees to ensure that their study/training provides practical solutions to the pressing security challenges facing the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.
He emphasised the significance of their studies in UNIPORT, given the prevailing security threat to lives and property, especially on Nigerian waterways.
The Acting Director of INDS, Dr. Chukwu-Okeah, expressed satisfaction that the occasion marks a new milestone in the history of the institute, noting that the Niger Delta has been besieged with environmental and security challenges, and it is time to rise up and build the region through the blue economy ideology.
The blue economy, he explained, emphasises the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and job creation while preserving the health of the ocean ecosystem.
He described the blue economy as the new oil well, with the potential to drive economic diversification, job creation, food security, and climate resilience in the region.
One of the inductees, Ayuba Tanimu noted that security is dynamic, and continuous learning and research have equipped them to serve their communities and Nigeria well.
He described the Nigerian Institute For Industrial Security (NIIS) as a body of security professionals that meets annually to craft security policies for the country.
The programme, which attracted prominent individuals from the academia, security, and other sectors had the 7th Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof Joseph Ajienka, as its chairman.
