RSG Trains 11 Disabled Persons In UK
The Joint National Association of persons with Disabilities In River State says eleven of its members pre already studying in England under the Rivers State government scholarships.
In a Silverbird radio interview monitored in Port Harcourt, Chairman of the Association in the State, Mr. Frederick Amakiri disclosed this as part of activities to mark the international day of persons with disabilities.
Mr. Amakiri also said that the state government has paid move than N500,000 each to 30 members of the Association in Higher Institutions across the country.
While commending the state government efforts in this direction, the chairman however said that government need to come up with a policy that will create more opportunities for persons with disabilities in the area of scholarship programme and employment opportunities.
Also speaking, the state Commissioner for Social Rehabilitation, Mr. Joe Poroma said that about 550 wheel chairs have already been purchased for distribution to various disable persons in the state.
Mr. Poroma also said that the ministry has already informed the various local government councils to send in names of disabled persons in their areas to enable them benefit from the various programmes of the government.
While stressing the need for enabling environment for persons with disabilities to operate the commission however stated that taking care of persons with disabilities has gone beyond what the government can do alone.
According to him, the government need the support of the private sector in this direction.
