RSG Set To Rebuild Assembly Complex
The Rivers State Government has clarified that the decision to demolish and rebuild the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex was due to the structural defects which arose mainly as a result of the recent explosion and fire incident which rendered the main building unsafe and unfit for human use.
A statement issued by the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr Joseph Johnson, in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, December 13, explained that after the visit of the state Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara on October 30, to inspect the level of damage done to the building on the night of October 29, it became necessary to invite professionals to advice the government on the integrity of the building.
It would be recalled that on the night of the attack on the complex on October 29, explosive dynamites were detonated on the complex, which shook it to its foundation.
As a result, there were visible cracks on the walls, and the entire structure looked frail, with debris littered everywhere, thereby making the complex unsafe for legislative business.
According to the commissioner, “After the assessment of the integrity of the complex, the experts warned the government that continuing to use the building in its present state would be disastrous”.
Johnson noted that the government had tried all cost saving measures towards the repair of the complex but had to bow to superior view of professionals to rebuild the complex to a more befitting edifice.
He explained that in the interim, the Rivers State Government has provided an alternative venue for the House of Assembly to conduct its affairs unhindered pending the rebuilding of the complex.
