Rivers Observes UN Literacy Day, Today
Rivers State will today join the world to celebrate this year’s United Nations Literacy Day.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Roseline Apawari Uranta, disclosed this while addressing members of the planing committee of the day.
She said the importance of the Day cannot be over-emphasised, saying that “my Ministry has always been at the forefront of women empowerment through literacy programmes for Women and the girl child”.
She said the celebration would invite lecturers that would equip women and provide insights into appropriate learning, business and communication skills.
The commissioner said the day’s activities would offer participants 21st century capacity to operate their businesses and other ventures effectively.
Uranta said the theme for this year is, “Promoting Literacy For a World in Translations”, adding that the objective of the day is to create awareness on the importance of basic education for women and to stimulate their interest to learn.
Earlier in her brief to the Commissioner, the Director of Women Affairs and Chairman of the committee, Dr. Carmelita Agborubere, said the day would be observed in the Conference Hall of the Ministry by noon.
Agborubere said the Slogan of the day is “Let’s Teach and Make the Country Literate”, adding that line Ministries such as Health, Education, Youth and other Non-Governmental Organisations would be in attendance.
