Vice Chancellor Tasks Journalists On News Accuracy
The Acting Vice Chancellor, Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Prof. Okechuku Onuchuku, has urged journalists to always ensure that they cross check their facts before going to the press.
Onuchuku said this when he received in audience members of Journalists/Reporters Without Border who honoured him with an award of “Outstanding Administrator of The Year, 2023” in his office, Friday, in Port Harcourt.
He said accuracy in news gathering/ reporting should be the core value of journalists in order not to deceive members of the public.
According to him, journalists, as watchdogs of the society, must endeavour to get accurate truth of a news story before publishing.
The Vice Chancellor also brought to the fore some developments in the university which he attributed to the management’s positive thinking.
One of such was the renovation of the Ndele Campus extension to full standard upon assumption of office.
The Tide gathered that the campus was infested by reptiles and rodents which made it uninhabitable.
He further revealed that construction of an ultra-modern student kitchen was executed by his administration in order to cushion the effect of the economic hardship on the students.
According to him, about 16 academic staff were elevated to the rank of professors in a bid to maintain a high academic standard.
“We harmonised book pricing. There is a ‘sorting’ Committee moving round in the campus to monitor sorting. Any one caught will be sanctioned”, he said.
The Economics Professor said a Book containing the dos and don’ts of the institution are well spelt out to avoid any sort of discrimination in dashing out punishment.
He explained that its road map was clear and would stop at nothing until the institution gained its rightful place in the comity of universities around the globe.
He also used the opportunity to challenge those who claimed to have purchased some employment slots during the university’s employment recruitment exercise to come forth, saying the School was willing to take full responsibility and do the needful.
