Staff Truancy: RSUBEB Moves To Sanction Principals, Head Teachers
In a determined and deliberate policy to strengthening the supervision of teaching and learning in schools, the management of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education (RSUBEB) has resolved that Principals and Head Teachers would be vicariously held liable for acts of truancy and inefficiency by teachers serving under them as such school heads will be removed and demoted to serve as classroom teachers.
A release signed by Karibi George, Director, Administration and Supplies/Public and made available to The Tide said the Executive Chairman of RSUBEB, Dr. Fyneface Akah disclosed this shortly after an extraordinary management meeting held recently at the board headquarters in Port Harcourt to consider the report of a panel set up by the board to review the cases of about 500 truant and inefficient teachers.
The statement indicated that Dr. Akah observed that countries with strong basic education systems rely on school administrators, rather than external evaluators to ensure that teaching and learning activities are carried out in accordance with best practices.
Accordingly, the board resolved that all staff without valid reason or excuse for being away from their duty posts shall be sanctioned in accordance with Public Service Rules and added that staff who unilaterally took sick leave or maternity leave without official approval will also face sanctions, since ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
“The Rivers State UBE Board, which manages teachers and basic schools in the State, has taken to special training programmes, examinations and quality assurance evaluation to strengthen teacher fidelity and improved learning in schools,” the statement said.
