NPFL: Rivers United Is Still On Course – Eguma
Technical manager of Rivers United FC of Port Harcourt, Stanley Eguma has said that his team was still on course to qualify for the Super Six despite the recent one all draw against Abia Warriors at home and 3-2 loss to Lobi Stars of Makurdi.
The encounter with Lobi Stars was a rescheduled for week 11 in the Nigeria Professional Football League, (NPFL), that was played on Wednesday in Makurdi.
According to him, the narrow loss to their host will not affect the performance of his team rather it will make them put more efforts as Nigeria League Champions.
This was contained in his post match interview and made available to Tidesports by the media Officer of the club, Charles Mayuku, last week Wednesday.
He attributed the loss to the centre referee for not managing the game well after he dished out five yellow cards and one red card to his players.
“ I am not the one to judge the referee. I think we should have done better if not that the referee did not manage the game well.
“ The League is till on we are still on course for Super six game. We have not lost focus because we are still the current champions, I believe that at the end of the day we will be one of the clubs to play in the Super six. That is our target now.
“ We cannot say it is over simply because we lost one game today.
We still have other games to play and we are going to ensure we get good results from those games”, Eguma said.
He equally said that what they need to do now is to go back to the drawing board and correct the grey areas in the team to enable them win their subsequent matches.

Iwobi Optimistic On S’Eagles Qualification
Iwobi spoke to Tidesports source ahead of Nigeria’s crunch playoff semi-final against Gabon on Thursday, November 13, in Rabat, Morocco.
The 28-year-old was reacting to Nigeria’s shaky World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the Eagles finish second in Group C behind South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
“We’ve managed to rescue ourselves from the dead,” Iwobi told Tidesports source.
We know we have the players and the abilities to compete against any other country in the world.”
The Fulham star pointed to Nigeria’s star power, highlighting African Footballer of the Year winners Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen as proof of the squad’s quality.
“We have last year’s African best player (Ademola Lookman), the year before that (Victor Osimhen),” he said.
“It’ll be a shame if we don’t make it, but we have a lot of confidence. We just have to prove it to ourselves.”
Nigeria’s path to the United States, Canada and Mexico has been turbulent, with two coaches departing during the early stages of qualifying before Éric Chelle steadied the ship to steer the Super Eagles into November’s CAF playoffs.
Four nations from the continent – Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo and Gabon – will vie for a solitary spot to compete in next March’s inter-confederation playoffs, with a view to joining the already nine qualified African nations at the Finals.
It would mark Iwobi’s second appearance at the World Cup Finals and the Super Eagles’ first since the 2018 edition of the competition.
Back then, Iwobi featured in all three games as Nigeria was knocked out in the group stage.
