UI To Honour Umaru Yar’Adua, Others
The University of Ibadan (UI) is to honour late President Umaru Yar’Adua with a posthumous degree as part of activities to mark its 63rd Foundation Day next month.
This was contained in a press statement by the institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Abel Olayinka, on Sunday, in Ibadan.
The statement said that Yar’Adua deserved the honour “because he appropriated funds for the opening up of the second phase of UI, Ajibode, which is going to accommodate further development of the university.”
It said that honorary degrees would be conferred on Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God; and Chief Folake Solanke, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
Also to be honoured is Under-Secretary General and Special Adviser on Africa to the UN Secretary-General, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari.
Our correspondent quotes the statement as saying that they were being honoured for their contributions to educational development and social re-engineering in the country.
“The Council and the Senate of the university, after a rigorous debate and consultation on September 15, approved that the four eminent Nigerians be appreciated for their contributions to the development of Nigeria.
“The honorary degree of the university is not meant for anybody, but for those that have really distinguished themselves with selflessness, such as those that are being honoured.
“The first woman Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Solanke will be honoured as a quintessential role model for African womanhood.”
Yar’Adua will receive a posthumous Degree of Letters; Solanke, Doctor of Literature; Adeboye, Doctor of Science; and Gambari, Doctor of Letters, all honorary.
