Delta Releases N5bn For Pension Arrears
Delta State Government has released the sum of N5 billion for the payment of pension arrears to retirees in the State.
A statement by the State Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, said the sum of N2.5 billion was released for the payment of pension arrears for state pensioners, while N2.5 billion was also released as grant to Local Government Pensions Bureau for the payment of Local Government and primary school retirees.
Recall that the State Government had accused the Deputy President of the Senate and Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, of planning to sponsor Local Government pensioners protests against Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the State Government.
The information boss recently explained that the Okowa-led administration had concluded plans to extend N10 billion grant to the local government but the expected bridging finance didn’t come in to fund it.
He, however, noted then, that “we are now taking steps to ensure that in the next couple of weeks we are able to extend that grant to them.”
Aniagwu said the gesture was part of government’s efforts at ameliorating the plight of the affected senior citizens in the state.
The Information Commissioner commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Vice-Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for his avowed commitment to welfare and well-being of citizens of the state.
He also acknowledged that the Okowa administration would remain focused in delivering on its promises to the people and commended Deltans for their support.
