Flood: Diri Lauds Azikel Group’s Donation, Extends Workers’ Break
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged corporate bodies and well-meaning individuals to take a cue from the management of Azikel Group of Companies that pledged a donation of N350 million worth of food items to flood victims in the state.
Diri made the call on Monday when President of the firm, Dr. Azibapu Eruani, paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Yenagoa.
The Governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, commended Eruani, a son of the styate, for identifying with the flood-ravaged people of the state, noting that it was a demonstration of his love for his people in their time of distress.
“You are the first person from our state to visit us at your level and capacity and that shows that you hold your people in your heart”, Governor Diri said.
Diri, who also spoke on the state’s airport road being threatened by the flood, said the government took some urgent steps to rehabilitate portions of the road linking the facility and that the United Nigeria Airlines resumed commercial flights on Monday.
“Let me let Nigerians know that the airport is not cut off. Our airport is functional. That is why Azikel Group today flew into Yenagoa through the Bayelsa airport.
“We took some proactive steps on the road leading to the airport. That road is now motorable and the airline operating here has also resumed today”, the Governor added.
He restated his call on the Federal Government to intervene in undertaking repair works on the portion of the East-West Road ravaged by the flood at both axis of the bordering states of Rivers and Delta.
He also urged the Azikel Group to expedite action on its modular refinery project in order to enhance supply of petroleum products to the state.
In his remarks, Dr Azibapu Eruani said his visit was to offer hope to the people since the State Government alone cannot shoulder the challenges occasioned by the flood.
He said the massive devastation caused by this year’s floods informed his management’s decision to donate the food items to the victims.
In a related development, Governor Diri has announced the extension of the break for civil servants in the state by another one week.
It would be recalled that Governor Diri had last Tuesday during a state broadcast announced an initial break of one week to cushion the effect of the floods on workers in the state.
He made the fresh pronouncement at Zarama Community where he made a stop in continuation of his tour of flood-impacted communities of Zarama and Okordia in Yenagoa Local Government Area and Kalama in Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA.
Diri stressed that the compassion of a true leader was felt not only during electioneering period but also in times of distress.
He underscored the need for all to be their brother’s keeper, particularly in this trying times, noting that natural disasters were no respecter of political parties or ethnicity.
In separate remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah, and the member representing Yenagoa Constituency 3 in the State Assembly, Ted Elemeforo, urged the people to see themselves as one and care for one another, noting that the presence of the Governor was to demonstrate his love for the people and his examplary leadership.

NDDC Backs Federal Drive To Cut Maternal, Newborn Deaths … Trains Traditional Birth Attendants
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has stated its commitment to supporting the Federal Government’s Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), with a renewed push to tackle the persistently high rate of preventable maternal and newborn deaths across the Niger Delta.
The Commission made the pledge during workshops for traditional birth attendants held in Delta and Bayelsa states, where it stressed the need for stronger collaboration between traditional birth attendants and the orthodox healthcare system to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Speaking at the training, the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, urged women to embrace modern medical care while leveraging the trusted role of traditional birth attendants in their communities.
Represented by the Principal Manager, Education, Health and Social Services (EHSS), Mrs. Dare-Oloko Kuami, Ogbuku described maternal and child mortality as an alarming public health challenge that requires urgent and collective action.
“The rate of death among women and children is alarming and must be eradicated. This training is designed to enlighten our women and should not be taken for granted”, he said.
According to him, the workshop was organised to strengthen the knowledge and capacity of traditional birth attendants in providing safe maternal and newborn care, identifying pregnancy-related complications early, and referring high-risk cases promptly to hospitals and health centres.
Also speaking, the Director of Education, Health and Social Services, Dr. Patience Ezugu, called on women to take issues relating to childbirth seriously, stressing that improved knowledge and adherence to safe delivery practices would help save lives.
Represented by the Principal Manager, EHSS, Dr. Otokolo Fidelis, Ezugu disclosed that more than 300 women from Delta and Bayelsa states participated in the training and were provided with medical equipment and cash support to enhance their services.
One of the resource persons, Mrs. Gift Akitiri, underscored the vital role traditional birth attendants continue to play in many rural communities, noting that regular capacity building would improve the quality of maternal healthcare delivery.
“Traditional birth attendants are trusted members of many communities. By equipping them with updated knowledge, we are helping to ensure that mothers and newborns receive timely and appropriate care, thereby improving health outcomes”, she said.
A participant, Mrs. Franscica Odiakosa, commended the NDDC for organising the workshop, describing it as timely and impactful.
“I have gained valuable knowledge that will improve the quality of healthcare I provide in my community. I have also learnt the importance of referring expectant mothers to health centres and hospitals whenever a case is beyond my capacity”, she said, while urging the Commission to sustain the initiative.
