Brain Drain In Health Sector Worries Rivers NMA
Exodus of medical doctors from Nigeria to other countries of the world demands a state of emergency in the nation’s health sector.
This is the position of the Nigeria Medical Assciation (NMA), Rivers State Branch. According to the associatiorn, brain drain is sequel to the inadequate funding, neglect of personnel’s welfare and tertiary medical institutions, among other issues in the sector.
Speaking to newsmen on the 62nd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the association in Port Harcourt, the Chairman, Prof. Chizindu Alikor, noted that the primary health care system is a critical component of health care delivery that demands critical attention and response by the government.
Alikor regretted that medical doctors in the nation have migrated to other countries including America and Europe for greener pastures, with the medical attention of citizens at stake.
Describing the national budget for health as abysmally low, Alikor stressed the need for government at all levels to increase funding for the sector to further boost the personnel in the discharge of their duties.
Reacting to the outbreak of Measles in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the state, Alikor said the outbreak was due largely to the non-compliance of parents to vaccination.
The Rivers NMA boss noted that the state Primary Health Care Management Board is committed to immunization, regretting however that residents including parents and corporate organisations have down played the efforts of the board by their refusal in turning in their wards’ for vaccination.
Alikor said, “Disease like Measles should not cause death because immunization has been made available by the Rivers State Government at no cost”.
“We call on families, parents, mothers, churches and communities to ensure that children are fully immunized. The message is that immunization is available in Rivers State. It is important, free, and does not kill”.
