Kaani: Abandoned With No Water, Power, Monarch Begs RSG
Traditional ruler of Kaani Town in Khana Local Government Area, Mene Barikpoa Apere, has sent a save our soul (SOS) call to Rivers State Government over lack of amenities in the community.
Apere during a chat with The Tide at the weekend said they have been abandoned despite near proximity to Bori, headquarters of the council area.
According to him, Kaani community is the largest community in the local government area and the third largest in Ogoniland trailing behind Bodo and Dere in Gokana Local Government Area.
He said that despite several attempts to connect the community to power and reticulate potable water have failed over the years.
The monarch recalled that sometime last year, the state Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, during a civic reception in his honour by Ogoni people, promised to connect Kaani to power, but regretted that it has not been fulfilled.
Aside power and water, Apere said the area also lacks functional primary health centre.
The worrisome aspect of this neglect, he lamented, was that the huge population in the community was sustaining through self-help as the only community secondary school it built in 1978, was fast decaying.
Also calling on both National Rural Electrification Agency (NREA) and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to come to the rescue of the community, Apere recalled that a proposal to connect the area to power had been abandoned as two 500KVA transformers given to the community has gone moribund.
He berated NDDC for carrying out a survey of Kaani 1 and Kaani 2 without executing any single project in the oil producing community.
With power and water, the traditional ruler said, the farmers and local business people can thrive and improve the local economy of the area, adding that youth restiveness and violence can be tackled with effective infrastructure.

HYPREP Tightens Security At Project Sites
Following the rupture of the ground tank of its water facility in Ebubu Community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has tightened security across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
HYPREP, which dropped this hint in a statement signed by its Head of Communications, Dr Enuolare Mba-Nwigoh, said the Project Coordinator, Prof Nenibarini Zabbey had given the directive for security to be tightened across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
Mba-Nwigoh noted that the tightening of security across the project sites has become necessary to forestall interference with the facilities.
He further disclosed that following the rupture of the ground tank of the Ebubu water facility, a team led by HYPREP’s Director of Technical Services, Prof Damian-Paul Aguiyi has visited the scene of the incident to assess the situation, stressing that the water facility has been cordoned off for public safety.
The statement indicated that following the incident, HYPREP has henceforth barred non-project personnel and non-facility staff from gaining access into any of its active project sites in Ogoniland without authorisation.
While appealing to residents of Ebubu Community and the public to remain calm, the Head of Communications assured them that the Project is taking prompt steps to restore water to the community, saying, the cause of the unfortunate incident is being investigated.
He equally noted that the Chief Security Officer of HYPREP has been directed to immediately tighten security across all its project sites in Ogoniland.
The statement said HYPREP is deeply concerned about the incident, stressing that despite the setback, the Project reiterates its commitment to delivering sustainable cleanup in Ogoniland.
