‘EFCC Harassment Of Fubara, Political Witch-Hunt’
The Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Council of Rivers State, Dr. Enyiada Cookey-Gam, has described the continuous intimidation and harassment of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship standard-bearer in 2023 general election and former Accountant-General in the state, Sir Siminialayi Joseph Fubara, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as political witch-hunt, perfected with desperate politicians to defame his character and fundamental rights at this critical period.
Addressing journalists recently in Port Harcourt, Cookey-Gam admonished the anti-graft agency to obey court judgement restraining it from investigating state finances and officials instead of being used as “cannon fodder”by those he termed as enemies of quality governance in the oil-rich state merely to brew political upheavals.
He urged them not to play to the gallery by taking the law into their own hands, adding that, “If it turns itself as instrument in the hands of political gladiators in the state to intimidate and harass opponents, we will strongly resist it.”
He cautioned officers of the commission to be professionally proactive, adding that the court verdict against EFCC not to meddle into state finances must be respected as no right-thinking person can employ the services of the agency at this political period to intimidate and harass persons in order to score cheap and skewed political points.
According to him,”Since 2007 when the court gave judgement against EFCC, saying that it has no business in the financial transactions of Rivers State and its officials, as well as another verdict in favour of the governorship candidate of PDP, Amaopusenibo Sim Fubara to enforce his fundamental rights, which up till date is yet to be set aside; the commission has been struggling, without success, to play to the gallery.
“We would not condone such disobedience by an organ of government bent on using their offices to tarnish the good image of persons that have no case to answer, instead of respecting and honouring the rule of law.
“Let us look deeply, we can discover that corruption has eaten deeper into the fabrics of officials of the agency, as it was formed to witch-hunt innocent Nigerians via desperate politicians who are out to reap from where they did not sow.
“Charity, they say begins at home. Let EFCC commence operations of such magnitude from its officials and sponsors, and allow people like Sir Sim Fubara to be or get prepared for resistance,”Cookey-Gam warned.
