Chuku Assumes Rivers NLC Leadership Amid Festering Crisis
Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council of the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Emecheta Chuku, has assumed the position of Acting State Chairperson of the NLC in Rivers State.
In a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt, Comrade Chuku said Chairperson of the Rivers State Council of the NLC, Comrade Beatrice Itubo, lost the legitimacy to the office following a March, 2022 judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Port Harcourt Division.
The statement reads in part: “This is to notify the General Public, Government, Ministries, MDAs, Multi-National Companies that are in partnership with the Nigeria Labour Congress, Rivers State Council, that by the judgment of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Port Harcourt Division, in SUIT NO: NICN/PHC/48/2021, between Comrade George Kaiserye and Ors vs. Comarde Biobelemoye Josiah, (MWHUN) & Ors, on the 9th day of March, 2022, made by His Lordship, Honourable Justice Z. M. Bashir; the irreverent claim by the Medical and Health President of the NLC that Comrade Beatrice Itubo is an employee of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria is void”.
The statement further inferred that Comrade Itubo’s appointment that qualified her to contest for the office of the Chairperson of the NLC in 2019 was invalidated by the said judgment of the court which has remained unchallenged.
“By the pronouncements of the presiding judge, the contract appointments made by the Medical and Health Workers Union (MHWUN) in appointing Comrade Beatrice Itubo as a ‘Principal Organising Secretary’ in 2018, entitling her to contest for the office of the State Chairperson in Rivers State Council of our esteemed Congress stands nullified”, he said.
Comrade Chuku, therefore, warned the Rivers State Government, corporate bodies as well as individuals and the general public to take note and distance themselves from Comrade Itubo as anyone that continues to have any transactions with her on behalf of the NLC in the state will be doing so at their own detriment.
