Illegal Street Traders: Deadline Expires ’Morrow
The deadline given to illegal traders along Victoria, Niger and Bende Streets as well as Creek Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State to vacate or face dire consequences, expires tomorrow.
A joint statement by the Chairman of Rivers State Environmental Sanitation Authority, Hon Isoboye Jack, Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Hon Chimbiko Akarolo and Controller General of Rivers State Traffic Management Authority (TIMA-RIV), Mr Nelson Jaja, called on the illegal traders to abide by relevant laws that prohibit illegal trading.
The illegal traders, they say, have constituted themselves into activities that run contrary to relevant laws of the state, hence, the need to ensure sanity and cleanliness of the affected areas.
The statement noted that areas that were clearly marked out as residential and recreational areas have been converted to markets overnights without any regard for the environment.
Also, owners of abandoned vehicles in Port Harcourt metropolis have been given one week to remove their vehicles or risk being towed as scraps.
According to the joint statement, efforts to rid the state capital of abandoned vehicles would continue for as long as those who indulge in such acts do not have a change of attitude.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Sanitation Authority, Hon Isobo Jack has once again called on the residents of Port Harcourt to obey all sanitation laws or risk being arrested and prosecuted.
Hon Jack, who stated this at the weekend while inspecting several areas in Port Harcourt, warned that the authority would not relent in efforts to rid the state of filthy attitudes.
He called on residents to always ensure proper baggage of their refuse and timely disposal within stipulated period, pointing out that the authority was doing all it could to discourage people from being prosecuted by ensuring they do the right thing.
The sanitation boss warned those in the habit of dumping refuse into drains whenever it rains to desist or risk being sent to prison.
