NLC Affirms Itubo As Chairperson, Disowns Emecheta …Dismisses Claims Of Alleged Crisis In Rivers

The National Secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has affirmed the sanctity of the mandate of Comrade Beatrice Itubo as the legitimate chairperson of the Rivers State Council of the congress.
The national leadership of the congress also disowned the purported appointment of Comrade Emecheta Chuku as the chairperson of NLC in the state, insisting that there was no known crisis to warrant any change in the leadership of the Rivers State Council of the NLC.
The apex body of organised labour made this clarification in a letter signed by the General Secretary of NLC, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, in Abuja.
The letter, addressed to the State Secretary, NLC, Rivers State Council, was titled, “Re: Report On Unfolding Development In Rivers State Council And The Sealing Of The State Council Secretariat”, and dated June 21, 2022.
The letter read, “We bring you fraternal greetings from the national secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
“We wish to acknowledge with gratitude receipt of your letter dated June 17, 2022 on the foregoing subject.
“We write to posit that there is no basis in the Nigerian law and the Constitution of the NLC for the purported displacement of Comrade Beatrice Itubo as the NLC, Rivers State Council chairperson, and the purported appointment of Comrade Emecheta Chuku as the acting chairman of the NLC, Rivers State Council.
“Comrade Beatrice Itubo is an employee of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), and there is nothing in her staff condition of service that requires her to relinquish her position as NLC chairperson in Rivers State on the account of her gubernatorial candidature of the Labour Party in Rivers State for the 2023 election.
“In the light of the foregoing, there is no controversy, and there should be no controversy on the sanctity of the mandate given to Comrade Beatrice Itubo to continue serving as chairperson of NLC, Rivers State Council.
“By this clarification, we direct you to inform the State Administrative Council (SAC) and the State Executive Council (SEC) that their position taken during their meetings which took place on June 16, 2022, especially in affirming the mandate of Comrade Beatrice Itubo and passing a vote of confidence on her leadership, are perfectly in order.
“We will continue to work with the leadership of NLC, Rivers State Council to address outstanding issues thrown up as a result of the needless confusion on this matter, and other pending industrial relations issues in the state to ensure that they are speedily resolved”, the letter added.
