Ten States Battle For Milo Basketball Championship Honours
After two years of COVID-19 enforced suspension, the annual Nestle Milo Secondary Basketball Championship returns with its 22nd edition with 10 states to battle for honours.
The national finals scheduled for National Stadium in Lagos between June 25 and July 1, would see hosts Lagos battle for honours against Kano, Bayelsa, Benue, Adamawa, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, Rivers and FCT Abuja
Speaking at the press conference in Lagos yesterday, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nestle Nigeria Plc, Wassim El-Husseini, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sports development through the sponsorship of the tournament.
“The Nestle Milo Basketball Championship provides a platform to help children imbibe values that set the right foundation for their future. As they participate in sports, they learn grit perseverance through hardship, courage to overcome fear, ability to work in a team, self-belief, respect, and leadership,” he said. “Since the start of the Championship, we have had several success stories which encourage us to keep sponsoring the initiative.”
President, Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF), Olabisi Joseph, noted the significant contribution of Nestle Nigeria Plc to the growth of sports especially basketball cannot be underestimated.
“Nestle Nigeria PLC has made a significant contribution to the growth of sports in Nigeria and the creation of a bright future for young people by supporting and promoting basketball in schools,” she said.” Every year, our school boys and girls look forward to participating in the biggest grassroots basketball championship in Africa, which is fondly called Milo Basketball.
“This is evident in the constantly increasing number of participating schools; from a few schools Participating teams in this edition include Government Secondary School Numan, Adamawa; Akpur College, Gboko, Benue; St. Jude Girls Secondary School, Amarata, Bayelsa; Davidhall College, Obalende, Lagos; Government Girls Secondary School Shekara, Kano; Queen Amina College, Sabon-Tasha, Kaduna will compete in the girls’ category.

Chess Championship: Dan-Jumbo Emerges Best Female Player
The third edition of Naphtail Chess Open Championship which ended on Wednesday in Port Harcourt saw Rivers State born Queen Dan-Jumbo emerged best female player in the tournament following her impressive performance.
It was clash of the Titans as top Chess players in Nigeria gathered to chase honours.
The three days competition was held at Vee Hotel, Trans Amadi ,in Port Harcourt and over 80 players in Nigeria registered for the tournament this championship was recognised by International Chess Federation (FIDE).
Speaking with Tidesports in an exclusive interview on Saturday, Dan-Jumbo said her dream was to become Grand Master in Chess worldwide.
According to her, she started playing Chess at the age of 15 but went into it professionally in 2009 as she represented Rivers State in National Sports Festival (NSF) in Kaduna, the same year.
“I started playing Chess in the early 2000s. I picked the interest through my my elder brother as him and his friends always play Chess in our compound so I began to learn it.
” In 2009 I went to National Sports festival in Kaduna represented Rivers State and I won a silver medal on my board.
“In 2011 and 2012 NSFs I won two Gold medals each hosted by Rivers and Lagos States respectively. While in Edo NSF I won bronze medal” Dan-Jumbo said.
The Asari-Toru, in Rivers State born Chess player use the forum to advice upcoming Chess players to be focus, saying losing a game is part of every competition but the most important thing was that you don’t lose hope.
“My advice for upcoming chess players was that don’t lose focus. Even when you lose, find a way to adjust and get back out”, she added.
