LG Prosecutes 300 Sanitation Offenders
No fever than 300 persons have been prosecuted in Ibadan North West Local Government Area in Oyo State for violating environmental sanitation law in the last two weeks.
The caretaker committee chairman of the council, Mr. Olatunbosun Adewale stated this during the monthly environmental sanitation by markets in the state. Adewale who commended the state government for initiating the scheme after the August 26 floods in Ibadan, promised that the council would ensure strict compliance with environmental laws in the state.
According to him, the local government council had earlier planned to treat 250,000 wells in some of the wards within the council with chrolorine but the council put the programme aside to accommodate the sanitation programme.
On plans to treat the wells, he noted that it was shelved as a result of the cholera out- break that the council witnessed few weeks ago in the area.
In his words: we noticed that the cholera out break was due to the apathy on the part of the past government to take the health of the people very serious.
But maintained that the council and the people of the state have since acknowledged the need to improve upon the health of the people. Adewale had earlier received a delegation led by the Deputy Chief of Staff to the governor Mr. Abimbola Adekanmbi to monitor the sanitation said that all the five zones in the council would be inspected to ensure compliance.
Also speaking, the director of Environmental Health Service in the council, Mr. Olatunbosum Olalekan, said Ori-Eru and Ayeye, Ogunpa and Dugbe and Eleyele were visited.
