No Regrets Making Diete-Spiff Rivers Gov -Gowon
Former Head of State and Commander-In-Chief of Nigeria Armed Forces, Gen Yakubu Gowon (rtd), says he is satisfied and fulfilled that he appointed then Navy Commander Alfred Diete-Spiff as Military Governor of old Rivers State, 44 years ago.
Gen Gowon made the assertion yesterday at the public presentation/launch of the biography “ Alfred Diete-Spiff. The Vision and Realism of a Statesman” held at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt.
In his goodwill message read by the Rivers State Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Andy Nweye, Gowon who apologised for his inability to be physically present at the event, expressed excitement that four decades after the decision, Diete-Spiff left enduring legacies that had remained a yardstick for political leaders especially governors to measure their performances.
He enjoined public officers in the country to emulate Diete-Spiff in leaving enduring legacies years after their tenure and wished Diete-Spiff the best of luck.
In a similar vein, former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo said that though Alfred Diete-Spiff was the lowest in rank among military governors when he was appointed , he achieved so well that he remains today an inspiration to younger Nigerians.
Former Senate President, Dr Joseph Wayas said he had the privilege of going through Diete Spiff’s biography and noted that far from being an image laundering piece, it was issue-based as it provides the reader a first hand knowledge of the challenges faced by the pioneer government and people of old Rivers State.
He commended the authors for using limited resources at their disposal to package a development framework that addresses the problems of infrastructure, quality goods and services as well as engendering wealth creation in the then newly created state.
Dr Wayas who was represented by Group Captain Sam Ewang, also a former Military Administrator of Rivers State, noted that creation of states by General Yakubu Gowon in May 1967 was as a result of the pressure from the minorities which the old Rivers State was part of, and said King Diete-Spiff tackled with precision, the developmental challenges and security of lives and property of the people of the state.

“The approved selling prices are as follows: One-bedroom semi-detached bungalow, N8.5 million; two-bedroom semi-detached bungalow: N11.5 million and three-bedroom semi-detached bungalow, N12.5 million,” the statement added.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, stated that priority in the allocation of the housing units would be given to low and middle-income earners, civil servants at all levels of government, employees in the organised private sector with verifiable sources of income, and Nigerians in the Diaspora who wish to own homes in the country.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, explained that several payment options have been provided to make the houses affordable and flexible. These include outright (full) payment, mortgage, rent-to-own scheme, and installment payment plans.
The ministry further announced that the sale of the completed housing units across the northern and southern regions will soon commence.

The ministry, however, clarified that the approved prices apply strictly to the Renewed Hope Housing Estates which are funded through the ministry’s budgetary allocation, as against the Renewed Hope Cities in Karsana Abuja, Janguza Kano, Ibeju Lekki, Lagos which are being funded through a Public Private Partnership (PPP).
