Old Boys Honour Classmate
The Okrika Grammar School Old Boys Association (OGSOBA class ’91-96), has marked her silver jubilee with an urgent call for all hands to be on deck to revive the school to its former glory.
The occasion was also used to honour one of their own, Comrade Tamuno-Omie Daye, who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Amaibi First Foundation Okrika for his outstanding qualities and philanthropic gesture, to the society.
Speaking at the occasion held at the Multi-purpose Hall, Okrika, in Okrika Local Government Area, the president of the association, Comrade Fuayefika Tamunokuro Loveday said the call became necessary following the deplorable condition of the school that had produced great men of repute in all walks of life.
Comrade Loveday said the Anglican Communion in Okrika should reconsider their early decision as a missionary school and hand it over to the Rivers State Government for adequate reconstruction and renovation as it is done in other schools to boost learning, stressing that the dwindling fortunes of the school was an eye-sore that needed urgent attention.
He recalled that the school was known for discipline, hard work and perseverance which is the spirit in them despite challenges, pointing out that with the fear of God they were reaping the dividends of what they learnt from the school.
The President opined that the silver jubilee was worth celebrating as God has been faithful to them granting them the opportunity comes together once again as a family to rejoice wine and dine for being alive.
According to him, “it is an epoch making occasion of re-union as we honour our distinguished classmate, Comrade Daye and appreciates one of our class teacher, Alabota Beauty James George Fuayefike, for presented the anniversary cake.
Responding to the award, Comrade Tamuno-Omie Daye expressed delight for the honour done hime and stating that it will spur him to do more by giving back to the society.
Daye said the award would encourage him more on his services to humanity and dedication to God Almighty, and enjoined the old students to be good ambassadors of the school by keeping up their good works with oneness for their growth, progress and prosperity.
Meanwhile, some old students, Mr Arnold Dagogo and Pelebo Reginald Fred who spoke with our correspondent on the sideline of the occasion further decried the sorry state of the school and called on the Anglican Communion, and owners of the school to without hesitation heed to the cry of the people by allowing Government to carry out work and give it a face life.
The duo also commended the Executive of the association for their vision, enjoining them not to relent and prayed God to continue to protect them.
Highlights of the occasion were cutting of the anniversary cake, admission of their wives as associate members that will only attend social functions of the association and talks on the need for continuing education and career development by Tokunengiye Aggo and Time and Evolution: Architecting the Equal Inequality; living potent in a community of interdependence delivered by Kingsley Ibanichuka.
