Commissioner Tasks LG Legislators On People-Oriented Laws
Lawmakers at the local government councils in Rivers state have been urged to identify problems affecting their LGAs so as to make laws that would help executive arm of the council achieve meaningful development at the grassroots.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Charles Okaye made the call last Thursday while flagging-off the two-day workshop for principal officers of the local government councils in the state.
Hon Okaye, said that such laws would go along way to reduce the problems associated with local government administration in the country.
He however stressed the need for them to pay more attention to the rules and regulations that have direct bearing on the living standard of the people at the grassroot level.
The commissioner expressed delight in the fast pace of development in the state, and urged the principal officers at the local government councils to emulate the developmental strides of Governor Amaechi.
Also speaking, the commissioner for Power in the state Hon Augustine Nwokocha, described the legislature as the only instrument that could make a government not to be dictatorial.
He therefore challenged the legislative arm of the councils to come out with by-law that would strengthen democracy at the grassroot level in the state.
The Executive Director of Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) Mr Noble Pepple, described the workshop as good things for service delivery in the local government councils in the state.
Pepple who spoke through the General Manager, Human Capital Development of RSSDA, Mr Godwin Poi, stressed the need for them to acquire the basic skill and knowledge of the programme, adding that it would help them deliver on their campaign promises.
