Merchant Navy Petitions IGP Over ‘Sabotage’
The Founder/ Commandant of the Nigerian Merchant Navy, Allen Edema, has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, demanding criminal prosecution against some individuals who impersonated him and the outfit.
Edema through his lawyers, Tope Fesobi and Associates, levelled the allegations in a petition dated September 2, 2021, and made available to newsmen, yesterday.
He alleged that Messrs John Okoronkwo, A.I Abass, Anthony Michael, Ogbona Innocent, Innocent Cornerstone, and Ndubusi Chukwuemaka, wanted to sabotage his efforts at ensuring legal backing for the outfit.
He explained that the bill to give legal backing to his outfit has passed second reading on the floor of the Senate and that the activities of the impersonators could send wrong signals to the lawmakers, working on the proposed legislation.
Edema added that the outfit, when established, would help the Federal Government to stem the tide of continued importation of illegal arms and ammunition into the country through the high seas.
He said the arms and ammunition being smuggled into the country was inimical to the growth and progress of the country.
Part of the petition read, “In the pursuit of finding a lasting solution to this ugly trends of bunkering and other unpatriotic act, we have been engaging the National Assembly to pass the Nigerian Merchant Navy Bill, which has passed second reading in the Senate.
“It is, therefore, unfortunate that the suspects mentioned above have never been part of the struggle to attract legal backing for the outfit but are bent on sabotaging the passage of the bill.
“The people have been parading themselves as officers of the outfit by wearing the Army and the Naval camouflage uniforms.
“They also forged the letter head paper of the Registrar of the Abia State Judiciary, which they used to write the National Assembly on January 11, 2021.
“This is a case of high level impersonation and forgery since none of the people are members of the Abia State Judiciary.”
The petition was accompanied with pictures of the accused persons in military uniforms when they were not personnel of any force.
Edema, therefore, urged the IGP to “investigate the brazen criminal act of impersonation, forgery and character assassination by the suspects.”
