Flooding: Experts Seek Review Of PH Master Plan
Some experts in urban and regional planing are calling for the review of Port Harcourt City flood master plan to check the perenial flooding in the city. The experts said this in an interview with The Tide at various locations in the city.
According to them, the city master plan needs to be reviewed to accommodate the increasing population and expansion of the city.
Speaking in an interview, Dr. Sheriff Eugene, a lecturer in Urban and Physical Planning at the Rivers State University said increasing human activities on the environment and the prevailing global warming are contributing to the devastation of the environment. Sheriff also said climate change and increased rain fall are problems that have been depleting the ozone layer, thereby causing massive flooding on the environment.
He stressed the need for constant desilting of the various channels across the city.
Also speaking, Dr. Christopher Lawson condemned the indiscriminate building of houses on water right of way, saying, it is what causes the blockage of water flow.
