EDC Tasks Security Agencies On Lecturer’s Safety
The Eket Development Congress (EDC) has challenged the security agencies in the country to ensure the safety of a university lecturer with the University of Uyo (UniUyo), Prof. Des Wilson.
EDC, a group of Akwa Ibom indigenes based in the United States of America, made the call in a statement in Eket on Tuesday.
The statement was signed by the association’s president and secretary, Margaret Itauma and Essien Nwaessien respectively.
Our correspondent recalls that UniUyo branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) last month expressed concern over the security of the lecturer following his reports as a returning officer during the April election in the state, during which he wrote an individual report pointing out some loopholes in the election.
The group condemned threats to the life of the professor and said that it was regrettable that he was being persecuted.
It said the professor should not be persecuted because of the role he played during the April general elections and a confidential report he wrote to INEC Chairman. Attahiru Jega.
“We believe that Professor Wilson has become an embodiment of virtue and courage. He has set high standards for the future of our young democracy by not mortgaging his conscience, ethics and convictions.
“Professor Wilson’s incident serves as a reminder that our road as a free nation where individuals can exercise their freedom of expression and discharge of civic duties without fear of victimisation is hazardous.”
EDC urged the various security agencies to rise up to the occasion to provide adequate security cover for the professor.
According to it, the security agencies should fish out the people behind the threats to his life and bring them to book.
