Speaker Seeks RSG, NGO’s Partnership On OrphansWelfare
The Speaker of Rivers State
House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Otelemaba Amachree, has stressed the need for religious organizations, corporate bodies, non-governmental organisations and orphanage homes to partner with the government to protect and improve the wellbeing of less privileged and orphans in the state.
Hon. Amachree made the call at a thanksgiving service organised by Coalition of Orphanage Homes in Rivers State in honour of the success of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi’s second term victory last Saturday.
The speaker, who was represented at the occasion by the lawmaker representing Gokana Constituency in the state Assembly, Dr. Innocent Barikor, noted that the partnership would ensure that donor agencies contribute meaningfully towards the academic and social upliftment of the disabled and orphanage children.
He assured that the state Assembly would vigorously pursue legal framework that would protect the right of the less privilege people and also promote their economic and social wellbeing.
The chairman of the occasion, Senator George Thompson Sekibo, who was represented by Kelvin Abam, disclosed that over 200 orphans in the state were under his scholarship to study in any of the Nigerian universities, saying that he prioritises the plight of the less privilege in his Senatorial District (Rivers East)
He commended the organisers of the thanksgiving service and urged them to see themselves as part of the society because the opportunities exist for them.
The General Overseer of Abundant Life Ministry, Apostle Eugene Ogu, advocated for a proper legislation that would enhance social integration devoid of stigmatisation of the less privileged in the society.
He observed that the less privilege were not carried along in the scheme of things such as hotels, schools, super markets, stadium among other public buildings.
He urged them not to be discouraged by the harsh environment they found themselves, rather remain focused on their dreams.
Apostle Ogu announced the award of five scholarships and cash donation of N100,000 to each of the six orphanage homes in the state.
The President of Coalition of Orphanage Homes Rivers State chapter, Comrade Emmanuel Nkweke, said that the mid-year thanksgiving service was aimed at appreciating God for Governor Amaechi’s victory at the April 2011 polls and his visible developmental achievements in the state.
While commending the efforts of the governor towards the wellbeing of the orphanage, he enumerated some of the challenges facing the orphanage homes, which include lack of electricity, scholarships to orphanage children to study oversea, lack of talent hunt among orphanage children, lack of grants to assist the running of the orphanage homes, among others.

UNIPORT Moves To Tackle Insecurity … Inducts Security Experts
The University of Port Harcourt, has taken a significant step towards addressing the issue of insecurity in Nigeria by producing security experts through its Institute of Niger Delta Studies (INDS), with the institute inducting its first graduating students into the Nigerian Institute For Industrial Security (NIIS), with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General E E Emekah, delivering a quality lecture on the topic, “Promoting Blue Economy In The Niger Delta: The Place Of Security”.
In his lecture, Major General Emekah emphasised the importance of security in promoting the blue economy in the Niger Delta region.
He noted that the activities of the Joint Tasks Force (JTF) are geared towards maintaining peace on Nigerian waterways and promoting productivity, and also stressed the need for a non-kinetic approach to security operations, winning the hearts and minds of the communities, and collaborating with security personnel to fight insecurity.
The GOC charged the inductees to ensure that their study/training provides practical solutions to the pressing security challenges facing the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.
He emphasised the significance of their studies in UNIPORT, given the prevailing security threat to lives and property, especially on Nigerian waterways.
The Acting Director of INDS, Dr. Chukwu-Okeah, expressed satisfaction that the occasion marks a new milestone in the history of the institute, noting that the Niger Delta has been besieged with environmental and security challenges, and it is time to rise up and build the region through the blue economy ideology.
The blue economy, he explained, emphasises the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and job creation while preserving the health of the ocean ecosystem.
He described the blue economy as the new oil well, with the potential to drive economic diversification, job creation, food security, and climate resilience in the region.
One of the inductees, Ayuba Tanimu noted that security is dynamic, and continuous learning and research have equipped them to serve their communities and Nigeria well.
He described the Nigerian Institute For Industrial Security (NIIS) as a body of security professionals that meets annually to craft security policies for the country.
The programme, which attracted prominent individuals from the academia, security, and other sectors had the 7th Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof Joseph Ajienka, as its chairman.
