INEC Holds Media Parley, Plans To Upgrade Polling
The Independent National Electoral Commission has kicked-started activities that would lead to the decongestion of Polling Units, provide easy access and increase the number of polling units in the country after 25 years.
Speaking during an interactive forum with the media, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Obo Effanga stated that staff of the commission had been in the field since April 22 to identify the locations where new polling units would be established according to the commission’s approved guidelines.
Effanga stated that there are currently 4,442 Pollng Units in the state, based on lower threshold of 500 and upper threshold of 750 determined by the commission for the conversion of voting points to PUs.
He said INEC planned to convert 2424 voting points in the state to full fledged PUs making the total PUs in the State 6866, which according to him, would adequately serve the 3,215,273 registered voters in the state.
According to him “Recall that during the last general election, all PUs with more than 750 registered voters were qualified for the establishment of a Voting Point.
“Under the arrangement for the expansion of access to polling units, INEC is now converting all VPs to standalone PUs. This is a mere administrative activity of the commission and there is no need for members of the public to attempt to pressure or lobby us to establish any extra PU anywhere,” Effanga said.
He further explained that creating extra PU will not be possible since they have custody of information on the existence of location and number of registered voters, among others in every existing PU, adding that the commission knows where new PUs would be created.
He said in siting PUs, the commission would not site PUs in private compounds, royal palaces, residences of government officials, political party buildings, among others.
