Ijaw Youths Threaten Attacks Over Seized Asset
Ijaw youths from the nine states of the Niger Delta region thronged Warri, Delta State, on Monday to celebrate the 50th birthday of the renowned Ijaw freedom fighter and former General Officer Commanding of the the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), High Chief Government Ekpemukpolo, aka Tompolo.
They warned the Federal Government over possible implosion in Niger Delta should the authorities continue to treat Tompolo and the region with levity.
The Ijaw youths called on the President, Muhammadu Buhari, to release Tompolo’s seized property and funds, as well as evacuate his company premises “as a token of the golden jubilee birthday gift to the Niger Delta former warlord.”
According to the youths, it is disrespectful of court orders and disregard to the rule of law for the Federal Government and the Economic and Financial Crime Commission to continually seize Tompolo’s funds and property when he has been vindicated and declared free by the Federal High Court in Lagos since 2020.
The Ijaw youths, through its umbrella body, the Ijaw Youths Council, described Tompolo as a freedom fighter.
The President of the IYC, Mr Peter Igbifa, said, “If not for the steps the stakeholders of the region have taken to maintain peace, security and stability, the Niger Delta would have imploded and bled the economy of the country by now. We are gradually getting to that crescendo level if steps are not urgently taken to address the demands of the people by the Federal Government.”
While calling on Buhari to release without further hesitation, the property and valuables of Ekpemukpolo, the Ijaw youths affirmed that “Tompolo is a symbol of freedom and a respected role model to many youths in the region”.
