Expert Warns Against Use Of Pesticides To Preserve Agric Products
With the growing demand for food, coupled with high cost of food items in the market, an expert in the agro-allied industry, Fredrick Orojo, has cautioned against the use of pesticides in storing agricultural products for local consumption or exportation.
He has also called for a serious campaign against the use of pesticides for agro produce storage, particularly in the markets, noting that many traders have deviced various shortcuts to the detriment of the consumers.
Orojo, who made this known while speaking to newsmen at the Port Harcourt International Airport, recently, noted that a lot of chemicals that have negative effects on the health of the people have been introduced to preserve food and agro-allied products.
According to him, government agencies like the National Orientation Agency (NOA), need to partner with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and other relevant agencies to undertake enlightenment campaigns on the danger of these chemicals to human health.
Orojo, who is also a consultant in the agro-allied industry, said that the desire to make quick profit, coupled with the inability of relevant government agencies to enforce order, have given impetus to many irregularities in the system.
“There should be massive campaign on radio and television stations in areas with massive production of what we consume , especially on the best storage practices, to meet international standards.
“We are in crisis. How do we educate these people to know that what they are practising is bad? We still have to educate our people, not only by sending them to school.
“No wonder, we have young people coming down with kidney and liver failure, and nobody seems to know which particular misconduct of ours is leading to the damage of the health of our people.
“All hands must be on deck, including you, the media. We have to develop strong strategy and commitment on how to reach farmers and sellers through this media campaign first.
“The society must be informed properly on the danger and risks of our carelessness, and this must be emphasised, because everybody buys from the market”, he said.
