Lagos Coach Faults Table Tennis Classification
Team Lagos Para-Table tennis coach, Mr Asaba Pius, has picked hole in the classification of athletes for the Para-table tennis game at the on-going 17th National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt.
Answering questions at the Agbani Darego Multipurpose Complex, venue of the table tennis and para- table tennis games, Mr Pius alleged that classification was done with little or no regard to the laid-down rules and that was adversely affecting the over all performance of he athletes.
“The main fact remains that when we look at the event, we see that there is problem right from the classification because a lot of athletes were not classified appropriately to their normal classes,” he said, adding that some disabled athletes either seem to have influence over the officials at the venue or where unduly favoured by the officials.
“Some of these athletes pretend. They’ go to the classification room, doing as if their disability is more than what they’re supposed to be classified to and at the end of the day, they’re classified wrongly,” he opined while enjoining the Table Tennis and para- table tennis officials to quickly address the anormally in the interest of fairness.
The Team Lagos Coach said, in spite of this, they still went ahead to draw the chat that is binding on all participating states, stressing that the chart did not favour some states.
“They have done the chart, even though the chart is not in favour of us Lagos State, we still gave our best, we know we’ve tried our best- giving to some extent in the games, winning medals,” he said.
With only two bronze medals in their kitty, which they won in classes three and five of the table tennis event, the Team Lagos Coach said they’re still hopeful of more laurels before the end of the festival on July 10.
“We still have men class three, four and five. There is also open class one to five and six to ten for men and women which has not been played at all as well as the ‘double’ so we are still very, very hopeful of getting medals for the state. Classes one to five is ‘sitting’ while classes six to ten is standing,” he said.
