Being One-Day-Governor is an honour given to the winner of the New Era Spelling Bee Competition for public schools in Lagos, of which Miss Eniola Ajala won the 2018 edition.
She said there was need for infrastructure improvement, especially in the schools of all the winners of the competition, so as to create an ambient environment for learning.
Ajala, who was at the extraordinary meeting with her cabinet members,  thanked Gov. Sanwo-Olu’s administration for the honour bestowed on the winners of the Spelling Bee Competition.
She also commended the governor for the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda of his administration and his efforts in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to her, members of the Lagos state executive council are good products of quality education and policies in the state.
She enjoined students to be focused, determined, prayerful and committed in order to overcome their challenges in life.
The One-Day-Governor, Ajala, is a student of Lafiaji Senior High School, Lagos Island, while her cabinet members included, Miss Grace Ikhariale of TinCan Island Senior High School, Tolu (Deputy Governor) and Miss Oluwatosin Akinbodewa of Iworo Ajido Senior Secondary School, Badagry (Speaker).

He said his government would continue to improve on the ambience of learning in public schools to bring out the best in students across the state.
Sanwo-Olu said that the competition was about excellence and to encourage students and youth population in Lagos State.
The governor urged students in various schools in the state not to rest on their oars to be the best, to persevere and be committed to reach their goals and endeavours in life.
He applauded Ajala for demonstrating confidence, knowledge, eloquence and pride, while admonishing her and cabinet members to be steadfast and not allow the little feats to get to their heads.
Sanwo-Olu promised to fulfill the requests made by the One-Day-Governor, among which were rewards for teachers, principals and infrastructural improvement in schools.
He also commended the Ministry of Education, as well the Office of Quality Assurance in the ministry for their efforts and tenacity in improving the education sector.
Sanwo-Olu also appreciated former First Lady and the founder of New Era foundation, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, who is currently representing Lagos Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly for initiating the Spelling Bee Competition.
He said the competition which had started for the past 20 years was not about race nor tribe but an excellence platform available to students of public schools in Lagos.
Speaking to journalists at the event, the Director General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, said the winners of the Spelling Bee competition would be sponsored on a tour programme to Finland.
“ Oluremi Tinubu, wife of a former governor of Lagos, Sen. Bola Tinubu, started the Spelling Bee Competition for public schools students and 20 years later, the programme still exists; that says a lot about Lagos State Government.
“To prepare for the Spelling Bee Competition takes a lot; it takes perseverance, hard work and consistency and that is what we expect our students to be able to do to prepare them for the future.
“It is good to know that all the winners of the One-Day-Governor and Spelling Bee Competition have succeeded in their various expected areas.
“We have people that are lawyers, Phd holders, doctors and professionals in other areas. We have those who are currently employed in Lagos State Government,” Seriki-Ayeni said.

INEC Derecognition Report Mere Propaganda – Abure LP

Published

on

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has dismissed reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) no longer recognises Abure as National Chairman.
National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Mr Obiora Ifoh, in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, alleged that the Senator Nenadi Usman-led faction was behind what it described as the “propaganda”.

He claimed that the Federal High Court’s decisions of August 15, 2025, were allegedly misinterpreted to suit this narrative.

Mr Ifoh said, “For the records, two cases concerning Labour Party were decided and dismissed yesterday by the same court.

“One by Nenadi Usman through one Chris Omofuma, her purported candidate in the Edo by-election and of course, the one filed by Labour Party through Barrister Julius Abure.

“INEC was the respondent in all the matters. While INEC for obvious reasons refused to put up any counter against Nenadi’s camp, it however, deposed to a counter affidavit in opposition to Abure’s suit, on the premise that it neither monitored nor recognised the March 27, 2024, convention in Nnewi, and that Abure’s tenure, along with that of the National Executive Committee, according to their illusions, expired in June 2024.

“The court wasted no time in dismissing the suit by Ms Nenadi Usman through Chris Omofume on the ground that both Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha were not National Chairman and National Secretary respectively, of the party and therefore are not competent to nominate candidate for the bye-election.

“The court also, while dismissing the suit by Abure and Labour Party, held that it lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter, noting that the Supreme Court had, in its April 4, 2025, decision in Appeal No. SC/CV/56/2025, ruled on the supremacy of the party and its ability to resolve its internal affairs using the party’s internal mechanism.

“In any event, the Supreme Court never said that Abure was not the National Chairman of the Labour Party nor made pronouncement on the Convention. It only said that issues of leadership is an internal affairs of the party. It is also clear that the Abure leadership is the party here and that is what the apex court referred to.

“Disappointed by the judgement of the Court, Nenadi Usman and her power mongering renegades went to town publishing INEC’s counter-affidavit which the court never relied on.

“For us, their celebration was laughable and a smokescreen meant to mislead members of the public. They know that they have nothing to really celebrate.

“They forgot so soon that that INEC’s so called counter-affidavit has been tested in various courts, up to the Supreme Court and has not been accepted.

“The INEC counter affidavit is clearly what the commission has been portraying all through in the courts since the beginning of their unlawful exclusion of our leadership.

“They tendered it before Justice Omotosho and it was rejected, INEC also said so in Justice Nwite’s court and the Judge ruled against them.

“They said so in the Court of Appeal, the court also ruled against them. Even the Supreme Court ruled against them.

“All those issues in the counter affidavit have been raised before and have been resolved against INEC. Even the Federal High Court yesterday did not accept their counter-affidavit, reason it refused to grant Nenadi’s request that her candidate be recognized to participate in the bye-election.

“It is therefore infantile for Nenadi to be circulating the same counter-affidavit as if it were a new document. Their celebration, to us amounts to nothing. It is quite unfortunate that they are celebrating that the Labour Party that gave them succor have no candidate, should that be what they should celebrate?

“Are they not playing into the hands of the opposition? Who benefits from all of this saga? Who is the loser? Are Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti not actually the losers in all of these?

“Are they celebrating because they want the party to die. A party that gave them hope when they didn’t have any hope, a party that gave them the platform when they were frustrated by other political parties.

“We are also calling on INEC not to ignore the order by His Lordship, Hon Justice Mustapha A. Ramat of the Nasarawa state division delivered on July 23, 2025 in a SUIT NO. NSD/LF.84/2024 in an interlocutory order directing INEC to accord exclusive recognition to Abure and Umar Farouk Ibrahim as the authentic leadership of the Labour Party.

“The court also ordered that INEC must respect every decision arising from the leadership pending when the case before it is rested.

“We urge INEC not to disobey a lawful order of the Court. INEC must be informed of hushed comments of what appears to be a desperate and obvious collaborative efforts between it and some renegades in the Labour Party to undo the party and to preclude it from participating in future democratic process. We want to believe that if there is any element of truth in it, Nigerians must rise and defend this democracy.

“Finally, we call on our party members to be vigilant and remain peaceful in the face of all these provocation. We assure them that the party under the leadership of Abure is intact and that we will smile at the end of the day. We foresee an end to this crisis very soon because Labour Party will come out stronger and better.”

PDP Candidate Decries Thugs, Vigilantes Invasion In Edo By-Election

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Ovia Federal Constituency, Rev. Johnny Akpitanyi, has raised concern over the alleged infiltration of his polling unit, Unit 7, in Oghede, Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State, by thugs and vigilantes.

He raised the concern while speaking with journalists in Benin City on Saturday.

Rev. Akpitanyi expressed regret that in this present time, the electorate were still not allowed to express their free will in an election.

“How can you see more than 150 vigilantes holding guns in a polling unit? It doesn’t make sense. In a polling unit, vigilantes holding guns? It doesn’t make sense. What are vigilantes doing in a polling unit? More than 150 of them,” Rev. Akpitanyi said.

The PDP candidate, while accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state of invading the polling unit with thugs and vigilantes, said if they felt that they and their candidate were popular and had delivered the dividends of democracy to the people, why populate the various polling units with thugs and vigilantes?

“If you know your party is good, if you know your party has done well, then why are you afraid? Why the vigilantes? Why the thugs everywhere? Allow people to go vote. If you feel your party, the APC, has done well or maybe you’ve done well for the people, then allow them to go vote so that their vote will count.

“So, this election violence here and there, it needs to stop and it’s going to stop now. That’s all I have to say for now. So, I’m precisely from Oghede,” Rev. Akpitanyi said.

He said he has instructed his teeming supporters to play by the rules of the game and should not take the law into their hands, adding that he was poised to follow the right channel to address his case.
