Oyo Disabled Athlete Aims For Gold In T’Tennis
The 17th National Sports Festival – “Garden City Games – 2011,” has recoded its first “work over”, with a disabled athlete from “Team Oyo,” walking over his opponent in the para table tennis class – 3 category.
The class – 3 special table tennis event that is holding at Agbani Darego Multi-purpose centre was to feature two disabled players – Olawale Oladimeji of team state but the opponent did not show up, a development that made the officials to award Oladimeji a walk – over.
Speaking with The Tide Later, Oladimeji who was on a wheel chair said, “yes, I had a walkover. The person that I am supposed to play with was not around, he didn’t show up for the event so they gave me a walkover. That takes me through to the next round of the event.
I’m still going to play some other matches. I’m hopeful, I’m confident in myself that I will win medal, a gold medal, to be precise. This is not under-rating other athletes because I know everyone is working hard to achieve their objective at the games but I am confident in myself and believe that everything depends on God who is the only one to take us to the point we’re aiming at,” he said..
Meanwhile, athletes who have featured in the table tennis and para table term’s events at the National Sports Festival who did not qualify to proceed to the next round are getting set to return home to their various states, as some of the state governments have already stationed vehicles to convey them and their team mates who also have been defeated at the various events.
