Rivers Maintains Lead On Medal Tablea
Rivers State has maintained its lead on the medals table in the on-going 17th National Sports Festival.
The State has 56 gold,18 silver and 25 bronze medals, bringing its medals haul to 99.
Defending champions, Delta is placed second with 26 gold,30 silver and 32 bronze medals.
The medals table released by the games services committee,signed by its chairman,Brig-Gen Emmanuel Okaro (rtd) and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Port Harcourt showed that Edo State is third with12 gold,13 silver and 16 bronze medals while Akwa Ibom is fourth with 10 gold,2 silver and 12 bronze medals.
The table also showed that Gombe,Kebbi,Sokoto and Zamfara states are yet to win any medal with less than six days to the end of the games.
The table revealed that a total of 580 medals have been won in the on-going games of which 167 are gold,163 silver and 250 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, Mr Boma Iyaye,chairman of team Rivers in the games has attributed their success to hard work and dedication.
He said Team Rivers was poised to win more medals before the end of the games.
“Well, there is no particular magic about our success so far.
‘’ We have really worked hard for this position that we are today. But I still have to let you know that we believe that there is yet more for us to achieve.
‘’ We want to see what what we will be able to do by Friday. You know that there is quantity of gold medals record which Delta set last festival in Kaduna.
So, we want to see if we can beat that. But for now, we are comfortable and we are happy that we are on top of the medals table,’’ he said.
Iyaye said the state was competing in the 25 games taking place at the festival and hopes to get more medals from each that had not been concluded.
