25 Indigent Students Get Club’s Scholarships
Asocio-developmental Organisation in George Compound of Buguma City, Asari Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, De Georges, has awarded a post primary school scholarship to 25 indigent students of the compound.
President of the organisation, Ipalibo Promise George told The Tide in an interview that the programme was to promote education with a view to creating enlightenment among sons and daughters of the compound.
George said the club which was established in 1996 had also intervened in the areas of skills acquisition programme for youths of the compound.
According to him, yearly covenant prayers have been held for the family, with Christmas palliatives being shared yearly for members of the family.
He said since inception, the organisation had intervened in several chieftaincy disputes in George’s Compound, stressing that the organisation has ensured that the compound remains united for the overall good of all.
He said the scholarship programme would be made an annual event.
The president also advised all sons and daughters of the compound to work together in unity, as well as render help to each other.
Also speaking, Chairman, Project Committee of the club, Dr Isobeye George said the scholarship scheme would promote education and reduce illiteracy and poverty in the family.
George said selection of beneficiaries for the scholarship scheme was done through a competitive aptitude test, adding that the test has underscored the need for government and public spirited individuals to invest in the education of the rural areas.
He said George’s Compound had become a model as far as Buguma City was concerned, adding that the covenant prayers initiated by the family in 1998 is being emulated by other compounds in the community.
He urged for support to the family in the prosecution of the scholarship schemes.
