US Advises Ivorians Against Quick-Fix Economy
The U. S. Embassy in Cote d’Ivoire on Monday in Abidjan advised the country to avoid quick-fix solutions as it struggles to regain stability after five months of political crisis that divided the country.
The West Africa correspondent reports that Cote d’Ivoire, once revered as the most politically stable country in Africa, has had two major civil crises in less than 10 years.
In a message to the Ivorians on the American 235th independence anniversary, the ambassador to Cote d’Ivoire, Philip Carter III, said the U.S. had its own share of crisis after its independence in 1776.
“The Declaration of Independence was an important historical event and full of symbols. However, it does not in itself guarantee the independence of the new countries that were the U S.
“Independence was actually acquired after an additional five years of war, followed by two more years of peace negotiations, the French, American and Spanish allies.
“Even after the introduction of the new republic, the country faced serious financial problems and regional conflicts as well as a weak central government that could not lead a country with a population expansion from various sources,’’ Cater said.
Cater said the path to reconciliation and progress must be followed painstakingly to ensure fairness and justice in building a strong country.
“Like their American brothers and sisters, the Ivorians have a role to play in building a country that could provide a model for people around the world.
“The challenges facing the Ivorian people are many and the problems will not be solved overnight.
“However, by exploiting the potential of its people and its resources, and relying on its partners including the U.S., Cote d’Ivoire can regain its role as the locomotive of the sub-region and regain its place in the concert of democratic nations, ‘’ Cater said.
Apart from historical similarities, the ambassador said the U. S. and Cote d’Ivoire shared common values in abundant resources, immigration, sport, music and arts.
“The two nations have also been faced with internal conflicts and faced the challenge of healing the wounds caused by these conflicts.
“Reconciliation is not an easy task, it requires patience, compromise and mutual forgiveness,’’ Cater said.
