Edo Govt Vows To Reduce Child Mortality Rates
The Edo Government says it will continue to provide integrated health services for vulnerable groups to reduce maternal and child mortality rates in the State.
Governor Adams Oshimhole gave the assurance recently in Benin at a public enlightenment programme organized by the state’s Ministry of Health.
Oshiomhole, represented by Dr Peter Ugbodaga, permanent secretary of the ministry, listed the vulnerable groups to include pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under five years.
He said that health facilities across the 18 local government areas of the state were adequately equipped to administer vaccines.
The governor said that the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) programme of the ministry was a key vehicle for cost effective intervention.
He said that under the programme, long-lasting mosquito-treated nets, tetanus toxoid, as well as family planning services were usually given to pregnant women.
Dr Casmir Aimebenomon, director, primary health, in his contribution thanked governments at all levels and international donor agencies for their collaboration towards poliomyelitis eradication drive.
Prince Ekpen Erediauwa, Oredo council chairman, who also spoke, appealed to parents to ensure that they took their children to the nearest health centres for immunization.
