#EndSARS Protest: NBA Lawyer Berates Commission For Striking Out Murder Case
One of the counsels, who represented the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Port Harcourt branch, Rivers State, at the just concluded commission of inquiry set up by the Rivers State government to look into the alleged acts of violence, torture, brutality, murder and violation of the fundamental rights of citizens committed by officers, and men of the Nigerian police in the state, Barr Higher Kings, has criticised the commission for striking out a petition that bordered on murder and arson brought before the commission for determination.
Higher King, a human rights activist says such decision by the commission to strike out such weighty petition has cast doubts on the ability of the commission to present a favourable report to the state government, that would bring the desired succour to the affected petitioners and family members of victims of police brutalities, who had approached the commission for redress.
The NBA lawyer stated this while speaking to journalists at the end of the public sitting of the commission in Port Harcourt recently, and noted that the decision of the chairman of the commission to strike out a murder case that had glaring evidences was regrettable
According to him, the NBA Port Harcourt branch, filed a petition to the panel brought by one Lucky Enyidah and Okechikwu on the burning of a 95-year-old woman and destruction of houses in 2019 at Omerelu, Ikwerre Local Government Area by the Nigerian Police Force.
“This matter dealt on the burning of 95-year-old woman in 2019 at Omerelu community. We wrote to police and there was no response, so we brought it here to seek redress but the commission chairman struck it out he stated.
This matter was listed for hearing on 17th, January 2021 but we mistook the date to be 18th, but the commission did not sit. So the NBA wrote for reenlistment of the petition which the commission did and the matter was fixed for 26th January, 2021. But it was so baffling that the chairman struck out the petition again justifying his actions that because we didn’t serve the police. Was it our duty or the commission’s to do so,” he queried.
The human rights activist opined that with the attitude of the commission, nothing tangible might come out of the recommendations made to the state government for consideration.
He averred that the experience of past commissions of inquiries in the state and the country had not yielded any fruitful impacts on the petitioners.
Take a look at justice Danago, Oputa, panel among others, what was the outcome? I have many petitions which I would have filed here but I’m aware that nothing may come out of it, that was why I refused bringing them here. Just that NBA assigned cases for me to come here and unfortunately, they were struck out “he stated.

Nigeria’s World Cup Absence A Big Miss – Terry
England and Chelsea legend John Terry has expressed disappointment over Nigeria’s absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting that the Super Eagles will be sorely missed as the tournament started yesterday Tidesports source reports.
Eric Chelle’s side finished second in Group C of the CAF World Cup qualifiers behind South Africa, who secured one of the automatic qualification spots for the tournament.
The Super Eagles kept their hopes alive by defeating Gabon in the playoff semi-finals but saw their dreams shattered after losing to the Democratic Republic of Congo on penalties in the decisive playoff final.
The defeat condemned Nigeria to a second successive absence from the World Cup, having also failed to qualify for the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The Nigeria Football Federation later challenged DR Congo’s qualification, alleging the use of ineligible players during the campaign. However, the appeal was dismissed, ending any hopes of a late reprieve.
Nigeria will be a big miss. This is a World Cup for participants who haven’t had the opportunity to play in the tournament. I would have loved to see a top team like Nigeria there because they’ve got some great individuals. They’re a great nation. So, yeah, they fall under that category for me.
“I think they are a big miss because Nigeria probably would have gone further in the competition, but unfortunately, one side’s loss is another’s gain.
“I know Mikel Obi is very upset that they’re not there. It means he can’t do more commentating on the World Cup. That’s why he was upset.”
The 2026 World Cup officially begins with co-hosts Mexico.
The historic clash, set to take place at the iconic Estadio Azteca, rekindles memories of the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which ended 1-1. South Africa took the lead through Siphiwe Tshabalala’s stunning strike before Rafael Márquez salvaged a draw for Mexico with a 79th-minute equaliser.
