PH Residents Savour Gains Of Festival
Some residents in Port
Harcourt have hailed the State Government for organising the ongoing 17th National Sports Festival (Garden City Games) 2011 since it would provide tourism opportunities to the state.
Making their views public during an opinion poll, conducted by The Tide in some parts of the city, the residents also called for improved publicity in order to woo spectators to the games venues.
Cynthia Igbeazu told correspondents, she became aware of the games through some posters pasted on vehicles that passed along her street.
Miss Igbeazu believed that the state would gain a lot considering the number of people that would visit the state within the period.
She therefore called on those representing that state in the different sports activities to ensure that they make the state proud by winning as many gold medals as possible.
Another resident, Dibia Harrison said as a sports enthusiast he would ensure that he goes to any of the games venue to cheer the state team to victory.
Harrison said: “I’am really excited in hearing that the state is hosting the whole of Nigeria on sports. It would afford other states to see what we have here.
In the view of Mr Chekivi Geoffrey Jaja, the Sports Festival has beefed up the beauty of the city, since the authorities have intensified efforts to check street hawking and other forms of nuisance commonly found on the roads of the city.
Mr Jaja hinted that during the weekends, he would make out time to visit any of the sports venue closest to him, nothing that for now the festival would serve as leisure time for most residents.
So also Alabota Ann Bupo expressed happiness that the sports festival would boost business activities especially for snack sellers and restaurants.
One thing I know this festival will do for us is that it would allow us make more friends and customers and I wish the state would continue to host this kind of activity frequently,” she opined.
