Minister Flays Non-Implementation Of Committee Reports
The Minister of Education, Prof. Rukkayatu Rufa’I, has decried the non-implementation of reports submitted by various committees.
A statement from the ministry in Abuja stated that Rufa’l made the comment, while receiving the report of the Presidential Task Force on Education, which was inaugurated in 2010.
She said, “We have a good system, but we have been having so many problems. Our main problem in the sector is not having committees and the reports, but that the reports are not being implemented.
“We have good recommendations on the shelves. In five or 10 years, we would have similar committees and similar recommendations.
“If we have been implementing the committees’ recommendations, we should have gone a long way
by now.’’
The minister commended members of the committee and assured them that their recommendations would be submitted to the president.
Earlier, the Chairman of the committee, Prof. Pai Obanya, thanked the president for giving them the opportunity to serve.
Obanya said, “the work is structured. We are guided by the advice of the president and the minister and at the end we came out with preliminary reports
“The work has just began, and we will be willing to help in various ways to ensure its continuation.”
He said that the committee had a seven-point agenda, which covered virtually the problem areas in education as identified by a summit.
He said that the committee looked at the management and coordination mechanism for education, like funding, and the laws regulating education.
Obanya said that the committee also looked at what could be done to bring the best people to teach in order to turn schools into educational institutions.
The River State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to deploy their various communication platforms toward promoting government programmes and policies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the education sector. Dr. Nwagor made the appeal when members of the Etche Ethnic Practicing Journalists (EEPJ) paid him a courtesy visit in Office in Port Harcourt. The Commissioner emphasized the strategic role of the media in shaping public perception, promoting government initiatives, and supporting policies capable of improving the quality of education and human capital development in the state. According to him, constructive media engagement remains essential in creating public awareness on educational reforms, students’ welfare, infrastructural improvements, and other interventions being implemented by the state government.
