We’ll Vote For Amaechi, A’Ibom Indigenes Declare …Despite Losing Oil Wells To Rivers
Barely one week after the Supreme Court of Nigeria handed down a landmark judgement that re-awarded 86 oil wells from Akwa Ibom State to Rivers State, Akwa Ibom indigenes resident in Rivers State, have unanimously declared their support to the candidature of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in the April 16 governorship election in Rivers State.
The Akwa Ibom indigenes under the aegis of the Akwa Ibom Real Peoples Association (ARPA), Rivers State chapter, said in a statement made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt, that their resolve to collectively cast their votes for Governor Amaechi and the Peoples Democratic Party is based on the conviction that “ Governor Amaechi is the real option for the restoration of the hope of the people of Rivers State”.
In the resolution, reached at the end of a protracted meeting last weekend and endorsed by Obong (Engr.) John Ekanem and Dr. Ezekiel Ukpong, acting chairman and secretary respectively, the people said the decision to back Governor Amaechi was taken after a careful evaluation of the people’s oriented programmes of his administration in the state.
“ After a careful evaluation of the people’s oriented programmes embarked upon by the Amaechi-led administration, we the indigenes of Akwa Ibom resident in the state in the 23 local government areas of the state in a well attended meeting resolved to cast our votes for Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi at the April 16 governorship election in Rivers State”, the statement said.
According to the statement, a committee led by executive members, have been constituted to begin massive mobilisation of all Akwa Ibom indigenes in the 23 local government areas of Rivers State to turn out enmasse and cast their votes for Governor Amaechi and the Peoples Democratic Party on April 16, 2011.
They urged other non-indigenes resident in the state to publicly declare their support for Governor Amaechi and work to ensure a total victory for the PDP at the April 16 polls in the state.
Speaking to The Tide the meeting, the Women Leader of Akwa Ibom indigenes in Rivers State, Lady Ofonime Umanah called on the women to make sacrifice on the day of the election to ensure the realisation of their dream of casting their votes to re-elect Governor Amaechi as governor of Rivers State.
Also speaking, the youth president of Akwa Ibom indigenes in the state, Mr Ezekiel Akpakpan advised the youths not to be deceived by self centered politicians to support wrong candidates but should give their total support to Governor Amaechi and ensure a total vote for his re-election.
